We want everyone to be able to ask and answer on 50heads, whatever device or assistive technology they use. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA on the website and to follow the equivalent platform guidelines in the app.

What we do

  • We design text and buttons to meet AA contrast. Color is never the only way we show something: a selected option has a disc as well as a coloured border.
  • We design and test public pages to work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus ring and a "skip to content" link.
  • Pages use real headings, landmarks and labeled form fields, and set the page language so screen readers pronounce it properly.
  • Result bars are designed to carry their numbers as text, not just length.
  • We follow "reduce motion" settings.
  • In the app, we aim for every control to have an accessible name, for text to scale with your system setting up to 130%, and for layouts to wrap rather than clip.

What we know isn't right yet

  • Some pages in languages other than English and Spanish have not yet been tested with a screen reader in that language.
  • The embedded status page is provided by a third party and may not meet the same standard; the plain link above it always works.

How we test

Automated accessibility checks run on every change, and we aim to do a manual screen-reader pass (VoiceOver and NVDA on the web, VoiceOver and TalkBack in the app) before each release. These checks do not find every problem, so tell us if you hit one.
